Piston Installation Check List

ATTENTION!

Before installation, make sure these pistons are what you ordered!  Pistons that are found to be incorrect must be returned as you received them!  Pistons machined or modified in any way will not be accepted!

To install your pistons:
1. Inspect pistons when you first receive them. Check for freight damage, proper number of pistons, proper number of retaining clips, etc.

2. Check outside label to confirm that proper bore size and compression distance pistons were sent/ordered.

3. Wash pistons in parts cleaner and air dry.

4. Piston to wall clearance is usually set from .004 to .007 for small block pistons, and from .005 to .010 for big blocks. This is measured 1.500 inches below the bottom of the oil ring groove. Check your piston skirts (Some pistons may be cut for more or less clearance for a particular application).

5. !!!IMPORTANT!!! If pins don't fit in pin hole force should not be used. In response to cost considerations and customer choice, pistons come with pin holes unfitted. We offer this service at a nominal charge and it is highly recommended.

6. Install rings in finished bore of block so that ring end gap may be checked (FOLLOW RING MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS). File end gaps as necessary. "RAIL RINGS" should fit snug to the piston wall. File ends so they do not touch. Place rail at the bottom of the oil ring groove. Install oil ring normally.

7. Used proper cleaning methods on cylinder block, making sure everything is clean. Most builders recommend tanking in cleaning vat, pressure washing, cleaning oil passages with brushes, final cleaning with a powdered laundry soap and water. Dry bores and wipe with lint-free soft cloth. Spray cylinders with rust preventing product - WD40, LPS, etc.

8. Most engine builders recommend that pistons and rings be installed using a coating of light oil or ATF on cylinder walls.
