This question continues to be asked by all levels of the
racing community. We have followed up on this with a top
coating specialist and learned coatings are very helpful
to both the life and performance of pistons as well as many
other engine components. Coatings are used to reduce the effect of
heat caused by extreme applications. When a ceramic coating
is applied to the top of a piston, it acts as both an insulator
and barrier.
First, the heat is dispersed or reflected away from the
piston surface. This surface insulation reduces heat transfer
to internal components such as rings, pins & rods, while
helping to prevent oil contamination through oxidation.
Second, a thermal barrier coating (ceramic) on the piston
top and a dry film lubricant coating on the sides, will
help control thermal expansion due to heat transfer allowing
tighter piston to cylinder clearance. An additional benefit
is the ability to move the top ring slightly closer to the
deck of the piston, which increases compression and ring
seal.
Third, if the entire combustion chamber and valve faces
are ceramic coated, the area can withstand greater chamber
temperatures without failure. All this adds up to the ability
to run higher compression, leaner fuel mixture, and a little
more timing for a net gain of substantial horsepower.
Ceramic coatings work. If your engine builder is a NASCAR
guy or a Top Fuel type, he probably already knows about
coating since many have been using them for years. Its
time for competitors at every level to reap the benefits
of ceramic coatings. Every setup is different and every
application is unique but in each case there are proven
advantages with coatings! Coating
